Scientific Smiley Research?

I read that Kat has just got stronger painkillers and has suddenly started using a lot of smilies in her posts. Since I've been on stronger pain meds than her all along, I'm wondering if there is a scientific link and if maybe I should do some research, or whether it's just that reading Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything" is going to my head.
